how to apply for an artist residency

After looking around at how others do it, adapting a few things to better suit our situation, we have arrivived at an outline for applying for a residency on Olive Street!

Acceptance into a two-week residency will be determined through a jury process and will require a written letter of intent* (what work do you propose to do while an artist-in-residence, and how it will contribute to the Olive Street and/or Lakewood Theater community), along with a few digital images of recent work or professional website address.  The deadline for submission of an application will be February 10th prior to the spring you wish to attend (waived for this year due to my lateness in getting this out there), March 10th prior to the summer, or July 10th for autumn attendance.  Notification of your acceptance into a residency session will be made within 30 days of receipt of your application.

Following notification of your acceptance into a residency, you will receive a commitment form which will need to be signed and returned within 14 days along with a deposit check for $350.  This deposit is to hold your reservation as artist-in-residence and will be deducted from the cost of your residency.  It will also serve as a commitment on your behalf to attend, and therefore is not refundable.

The total cost to attend a two-week program (which includes lodging, studio space, and meals**) will be $1500 for summer residencies, $1000 for spring or autumn residencies.  Payment in full must be received no less than 15 days prior to your scheduled begin date.  Travel costs & arrangements, as well as the cost of art supplies will be the responsibility of the artist.

The summer season follows that of the theater, being mid-May to mid-September. Spring is mid-April to mid-May, and autumn is mid-September to mid-October. Full season residencies may be available. Please contact us for more information including pricing.  createonolivestreet@gmail.com

October

The Lakewood season ends each late September and by mid October things are quiet on Olive Street. Plans for the future are to be here all year long, creating autumn and winter happenings. But not this particular year, as I am required elsewhere. Oh I'll be by to visit, because I will miss her, dear Olive, and dream of the Springtime

a look back

A look back, though not too far back.  Here is a video from last year, the 2018 Lakewood Theater Season in Review.

sea nymph

Did a little research and found that the sea nymph logo on my vending machine was part of a larger Dr. Pepper logo of two sea nymphs. Who were based upon an image from earlier Dr. Pepper marketing

Arriving soon for my little cottage porch... a 1960's era Dr. Pepper vending machine with a beautiful Sea Nymph logo.

plans taking shape for the Tower House

Some minor and major improvements had been made on the first floor of the Tower House for my son's summer stay (a bit of painting, finishing of walls, and indeed a whole new bathroom) but next year we will really see design take shape.

The dining room will become a small bedroom.  A wall between the kitchen and living room will be taken down to give the whole area a more open space. New, less steep stairs will lead to a second floor landing, where we'll place bookcases and a couple of futons. And we'll put in a spiral staircase to the tower and the bedroom there. Or should the tower be a studio space? Community space? We'll see.

Most definitely electricity will be installed in the Dance Hall, and gardens planted throughout the grounds.

great blue

This Great Blue Heron was seen fishing in Hayden Brook during a "Tuesday Tea Tasting" at the Sugar Tree Cottage yesterday. Another example of the wonders to be found on Olive Street!

The Vultures

Who will inherit Simon West's fortune? The charming realtor, the handsome male model, the dimwitted nail technician, the bitter old woman, the gay hairdresser, or the mild mannered accountant? Lots of fun, come see   The Vultures   at Lakewood Theater, playing August 29th through September 7th

My son Jakob is in this production, appearing alongside cast members he's performed with before, and I'm sure he'll tell you it's a pleasure every time (it's show biz, you know?) Most excitedly though, he gets to share the stage for the first time with the wonderful Midge. He's been one of her theater kids, from Young Performers through Teen, Tech, and Tour but after seven years of all that, this is their first time together on the main stage.

Tickets to all Lakewood Theater productions are available at the box office, by calling 474-7176  or online by clicking here

meanwhile, somewhere else

So this is where I will plan to be when not on Olive Street. A new personal studio, rather than having my art and tools scattered around the place. I admit that it is wonderful to be working on this project at the same time as Olive Street!
