intern opportunities at Lakewood Theater

Happy to help announce that Lakewood Theater will be offering summer intern positions for 2024!

This is a wonderful opportunity for those interested in learning theater craft in the costume shop, box office/marketing, and of course, backstage. 

All internships include a weekly stipend, a ticket to each of the season's shows, and housing right here on Olive Street.

In addition to the intern possibilities there are two hourly wage positions open at Lakewood Theater this year; Technical Director and Theater Technician/Carpenter. Each of these also include tickets, housing, and a few other perks.

Lakewood Theater 2024 Season

Lakewood Theater has announced plays for the 2024 season! 

This is the first true sign of Spring, well awaited every year. 

Auditions will be in March, and then call-backs, first call and rehearsals. Then there you are, having just finished a lovely meal at the Lakewood Inn Restaurant, walking across to your seats. Let the magic begin!

Leading Ladies

Tucker Atwood presents his own play, "Waiting in the Wings" at Lakewood Theater for three days at the end of the season! Performing Friday, September 29th  & Saturday, September 30th at 8pm, and  Sunday, October 1st at 4pm

The description is as follows: While the ghosts of a recently deceased actor and a long-forgotten usher roam through the cluttered backstage of the theater they each called home, a group of living thespians make an unexpected connection between their worlds. As the season progresses, all souls become deeply intertwined in the complicated web of life, death, and summer theater.

Cast notices for the 2023 Lakewood Theater Season went out today! There will soon be a bustle of folks picking up thier scripts and getting ready for rehearsals! 

Just like you, I'll be waiting to hear who is in what, but know I am excited to be welcoming back MJ Clifford, Tucker & Autumn Atwood, and Colton Bagley here on Olive Street [Jakob Sutton, of course, is already here... and it is confirmed that he will be appearing on the Lakewood stage as well]

We still have space available for theater & restaurant folk (read more about that on the LCH page) and artists in residence (please see the Art Residencies page for that)

In the snow, in the quiet, the community bridge between Olive Street and the Lakewood Theater parking lot waits for heavier traffic.

Local folks occasionaly cross on thier winter walks, and to go ice fishing, but for the most part few go by this time of year.

Last summer it was beautiful to see her rail lit by a string of tiny lights each evening and I'm looking forward to doing that again.

October on Olive Street

October is such a beautiful time of year! It brings with it slowing down and a chance to breathe in the cool air. The bright flowers of summer give way to the muted colors of mums, the squirrels start to get a little more serious with thier gathering. On Olive Street it means the transition from the summer season to the winter and the change of activities.  A tiny flea market in being planned to take place at the Tower House this month, as we let a few things from storage go and offer handmade goods from the Sugar Tree Cottage. [contact me if you would like to set up a table here as well]   We are also still seeking volunteers for Halloween to decorate, dress up, and hand out goodies perhaps.... and if there is enough interest we could do a haunted house! Or two or three even? 

November will see us continuing projects, including the repairs to the bridge for my Sugar Tree Cottage, so we can again be welcoming nordic skiiers in for hot chocolate this winter; and the small studio space will be available. Studio space will also be opened at the Tower House. What comes next after that is shifting the Perkins House on it's axis to set a little further back from the corner, and make way perhaps for planting more apple trees next May. Through the rest of the winter the Brook House will be completed, as well as the new Gardeners Cottage... and maybe another surprise or two. 

Right now we are enjoying the last few opportunities to dine at the Lakewood Inn Restaurant, and looking forward to the actor's awards banquet for Lakewood Theater in a couple of weeks. Though that side of the brook gets sleepy soon, we remain to watch the ice and snow arrive, and melt again. Cozy in our cottages

Anything to Declare?

It's the final show of the season and what a farce!

The Dupont family is thrilled that their naïve young daughter has married Count Robert de Trivelin. However, upon returning from their honeymoon, it is made clear that the young bridegroom has yet to consummate the marriage, and indeed seems to be suffering from a psychological block brought on by a border crossing guard yelling out “Have you anything to declare?” at a particularly delicate moment. With only three days left to meet his mother-in-law’s demand for a grandson, or at least the promise of one, the count seeks the assistance of Zeze, a courtesan who is passing herself off to her clientele as a prominent artist. The entire Dupont family manages to parade through Zeze’s salon and back to the Dupont home, along with a sobbing ex-suitor of the bride, a camel dealer of unknown origin, and a maid desperate to break ties with Zeze and start a career of her own. As the clock continues to tick away, a chaotic race to consummate the marriage results in everyone learning just a little bit more than they might have wanted to!

Dirty Rotten Scoundrals

What a great time was had at Lakewood Theater during the performances of the Drowsy Chaperone! The next musical at Lakewood Theater, running August 18th - 27th, will be Dirty Rotten Scoundrals.

"The play based on the popular 1988 MGM film, takes us to the French Riviera for high jinks and hilarity. Sophisticated, suave with a good dash of mischief, this hysterical comedy features a delightfully jazzy score and was nominated for a staggering eleven Tony Awards."

Olive Street's Jakob Sutton can be seen popping up now and again, with more than half a dozen charectors

The Drowsy Chaperone

A musical is up next at Lakewood Theater: The Winner of five Tony Awards, including Best Book and Best Original Score, The Drowsy Chaperone is a loving send-up of the Jazz Age musical, featuring one show-stopping song and dance number after another 

With the houselights down, a man in a chair appears on stage and puts on his favorite record: the cast recording of a fictitious 1928 musical. The recording comes to life and The Drowsy Chaperone begins as the man in the chair looks on. Mix in two lovers on the eve of their wedding, a bumbling best man, a desperate theatre producer, a not-so-bright hostess, two gangsters posing as pastry chefs, a misguided Don Juan and an intoxicated chaperone, and you have the ingredients for an evening of madcap delight.

Two nuns at the Sisters of Perpetual Sewing have been secretly making wine to keep the convent’s doors open, but Paul and Sally, reporters and former fiancées, are hot on their trail. They go undercover as a nun and priest, but their presence, combined with the addition of a new nun, spur paranoia throughout the convent that a spy has been sent from Rome to shut them down. Wine and secrets are inevitably spilled as everyone tries to preserve the convent and reconnect with lost loves. Accusations, mistaken identities, and romances run wild in this traditional, laugh-out-loud farce.

sunrise & the new season

Watching the beautiful sun rise over Lakewood Theater from my porch* with my cup of tea & the cat.

This comming week marks new beginnings, with three new theater guests moving into the Tower House.

Colton Bagley is returning to the costume shop to lend his talent, and will also be found waiting tables at the Lakewood Inn Restaurant.

August Thornton returns to our stage -  you may remember him from  Mid-Summer and  Living on Love in 2021 -  and can be seen in  The Girl on the Train  playing June 9th - 18th, and  Great Expectations which runs September 1st - 10th.  He will be one of your waiters at the Inn as well.

Travis Harden is making his debut on the Lakewood Theater stage, in The Girl on the Train.

Tucker Atwood & Autumn Stupica are going to be staying in the Perkins House again this season. Autumn will be making her Lakewood debut in Critic's Choice  which runs June 23rd - July 2nd, and will also be in  Anything to Declare  September 15th - 24th. . Tucker can be seen in  The Drowsy Chaperone  July 7th - 16th,  and  Anything to Declare.

Arriving later this season, MJ Clifford & Willow-the-cat will be my very honored guests at the Sugar Tree Cottage again, with MJ performing in  Halfway There  July 21st - July 30th while Willow keeps an eye on the cottage and soaks up some sun: and then returning for Great Expectations. 

Already here on Olive Street of course is Jakob Sutton.  Jakob will be in the opening production of the year  Drinking Habits  May 26th - June 4th, an ensemble member in both of the musicals -  The Drowsy Chaperone  July 7th - 16th &  Dirty Rotten Scoundrels  August 18th - 27th - and in the closing production of the year Anything to Declare  September 15th - 24th.

*The theater building itself may be hidden from view in the photo by the porch screen door frame in this photo, but it is surely there, standing fast. One of the benefits of being at the cottage through the late autumn to early springtime is the view during and following abscission, through the time of budding.

re-introduction

It would seem a little strange, maybe, but here in winter, when the pace is a little slower than... well... other times, I suppose...  a simple hello to those perhaps just joining us!

So, hello, I am Dawnella. I grew up in the 1970's just up the hill from Lakewood Theater. Being indeed very very entertained by enchanting stories about the theater by my neighbor Libby, one of Herbert Swett's daughters whose husband was in charge of things along with her brother-in-law for a while, I always felt that the place was magical. 

Years later I introduced my son Jakob to Lakewood through their Young Performers Camp. He then hit the main stage in 2012, and he's been at Lakewood every summer since! 

Together with a little help from others, we began restoring camps & cottages on Olive Street in 2019 with the goal to make spaces available to actors, techies, and those who love the old theater as much as we do. 

keep the light on

You may be familar with the ghost light in the theater -  a single bulb left burning whenever the theater is dark* - but I have been enjoying a ghost light of another sort this off season as well, as the large light in the Lakewood Theater parking lot has remained lit nightly, a clear and steady beacon visable from the Sugar Tree cottage. It brings me comfort. 

Like my personal lighthouse in the winter fog.

*A theater being "dark" means that the theater is currently not open, not just the state of physical lighting. No shows, no rehersals, no sets being built. In general, some say the light is on to keep away ghosts, some say it is to light the way for the ghosts that already inhabit the theater (which is more the case for Lakewood)... and some even say it is on to keep the stage manager from tripping when he first comes in to work
