another Lakewood Theater actor on Olive Street

Though just for a brief stay, rumor has it that one more Lakewood Theater actor can now be added to our list of "slept here" plaques to be put up in our guest houses here on Olive Street... 

Welcome Art Meneses, the titular charector in Scapino*, currently playing at Lakewood.  Art appeared on the Lakewood stage in the late 1990's and then returned in 2018 for roles in Incorruptible, and The Legend of Georgia McBride.  He's been back on stage at Lakewood every year since!  This season he could also be seen in Drinking Alone, and made his directorial debut with Mid Summer.

The Lakewood season will close following Who's in Bed with the Butler?  which runs from September 9th to September 19th; but as my vision goes for making Olive Street a place for actors, artists, and their families, I am pretty proud that we've been able to have as our guests this season, four of the finest. 

We hope all our legendary Lakewood folk that spent time with us this year will stay with us again next, and beyond; especially after we get the community space at the Tower House all jazzed up for you!

As I wrote in the "Swampy" post within this very blog (April 2019) "All of his summers since 2011 have been spent around the Lakewood Theater. He was part of several Young Performers/Teen, Tech & Tour performances, and has now also appeared in nearly a dozen main stage productions. Additionally he ushers regularly, and sometimes works backstage.  He has acted, directed and stage managed with/at/for several other companies as well, but it is clear that Lakewood is his favorite and there's no place he'd rather be.[other than Salamanca Spain perhaps] He intends to be a part of the Lakewood community for a long, long, very long time indeed."  

This is my son Jakob. (So perhaps I may seem biased about him being my favorite.)

He's here again for another season; ushering and being a Shanty Man, as well as recently adding spotlight operator for  Bullshot McCrummond  to his Lakewood list of experiances. This week he'll be on the stage again, bringing another charector to life in his portrayal of Leo, a mob boss's son in  Scapino. 

The Lakewood Theater website describes the show as follows:  "In this hilarious update of Moliere’s classic farce, disgraced lawyer Scapino returns to Naples, Florida after serving jail time for helping a mob family.  Though Scapino tries to put his past behind him, family pressure, old grudges, and the allure of new love all conspire to lead him back into trouble. Marx brothers meet the Three Stooges."

Olive Street blues

Taking a moment to share the beautiful blue hydrangeas at the neighbor's across from the Perkins House & beside the Hayden Brook camp. Naturally, not wanting to be outdone, our own nearby clusters of blueberries stepped up and started their transition to blue as well. Furthermore, this morning there were six Bluejays asking for seed around the feeder at 29 Olive. So it's the color of the day, and a good color to be indeed.

treat yourself to some tea

A follow up thought to yesterday's post: if you are one of the folks dropping off someone for Lakewood Theater's Young Performers Camp, why not take a few moments afterward for a calming cup of tea at the Tower House Community Kitchen?  Or fix yourself a snack! The Community Kitchen pantry is stocked (thanks to our "bees") with the essentials and is there for YOU as a member of the Lakewood Theater family!

One of the most wonderful sounds to hear, that of children laughing and singing, came drifting across the brook as I stepped out on the porch of the Sugar Tree cottage this mid-morning. The Lakewood Theater Young Performers Camp is in session!

Camp, cottage, cabin, house... it can get confusing what to call these spaces we have here on Olive Street, even when there's an architect's dictionary right in front of me.  So if while talking of them sometimes the nomenclature changes, it's just because I mean to say "come and sit down, have a cup of tea, here is shelter and comfort, you are welcome here"

Chaunticleer

This is one of the creative crossstitch art peices made by MJ Clifford, during her stay at the Sugar Tree Cottage this June. I have named him Chaunticleer, and he is now very proudly hanging and watching over the cottage's breakfast nook!

 

More of MJ's crossstichery creations can/will be found hanging in other cabins we have on Olive Street, and many are available for sale right in the Lakewood Theater lobby, or through her own Wee Willow facebook shop which includes her sweet magnets and greeting cards as well.

Often seen walking along Olive Street on his way to or from Lakewood Theater, is Jacob Coombs, man of many talents and an important part of the Lakewood community. Waiter at the Lakewood Inn Resturant,  set builder/head carpenter at the theater, and actor. He has graced the main stage since 2013 and this season he appears in three of Lakewood's eight productions!  Come see him in  But Why Bump Off Barnaby?, Bullshot Crummond, and Who's in Bed with the Butler?

Tucker Atwood will be our first "artist is residence!"  We haven't worked out what his barter exchange will involve yet, but he will be spending the entire Lakewood season in the Perkins House!

When not on stage, Tucker is a maths teacher, an avid hiker (he has had some adventures on the Appalachian Trail even), bicyclest, and a writer.
